Hi,

I am wondering if anyone knows of any free software i can use to build a knowledge base? Preferably something web based. I have been looking at a Wiki but i am just wondering if anyone knows of anything else that can be used.

Thanks

I did a lot of research on this about seven months ago when I was looking for a good kb for our website. There are loads of free so-called kb systems but most are just adaptations of either a FAQ system or a CMS.

In the end, following a number of recommendations, I purchased PHPKB Knowledge Base Software from knowledgebase-script.com. It's not free, but it comes with full source code and it is easy to set up and use, reliable, secure, and easy to customize. They responded to my purchase enquiries quickly and on the one occasion I need to query something, I got a very quick and informative response.

I particularly like the way someone can ask a question and before it is submitted, relevant possible answers (suggestions) are returned. They offer a 30-day evaluation trial so you can see for yourself whether it is a good fit for what you want a KB software to do. I researched and tried a few scripts, but at the end of the day the cost of buying PHPKB was less than the cost of my time messing around trying to change cms/FAQ/wiki type scripts to do what I wanted.

We use an application called xWiki. Similar to mediawiki but a proper GUI and you can build web apps of your own using the inbuilt languages. Tis rather good imho

Hi,

I am looking into this again. Thanks to those who suggested something. I would like something that staff can search but also private articles that only IT techs can see.

If i do find anything i will report back.

Thanks

Thread necromancer, but since it your own thread…

I’m trying to do something similar, we have Webhelpdesk by SW formerly mac design. It is free for one tech and has a FAQ section that you can set each entry to tech or everyone.

If you want a KB seperage from the ticketing system try Tikiwiki it has a very granular permissions system and you may be able to achieve your goal with it.

@CyberNerd why did you scrap RTFM please?

We used it in conjunction with RequestTracker, when we moved to Google apps we decided to combine the system into google groups.

It wasn't for any lack of functionality, just it was another server to look after and I'm a firm believer in keep it simple and we didn;t really need all the extra functionality of RTFM/RT

Still gone down xwiki at my new place two. Multi wiki/user groups are supported pretty simple setup and tons of good features. Has a Google like search now too as it uses solr search indexing
