FOG Server wont upload image.

Hi,

 

I am trying to upload an image from a HP Compaq machine onto our FOG server. This is working with other machines in the school (RM Machines) however when I try and upload an image from this type of machine it does its usual stuff....

 

loading fog/kernelbzImage ......

loading fog/images/init.gz.................................................................................

................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................

........................................ready.

 

Then the machines seems to go into standby. The monitor goes blank, USB goes to sleep and It will just sit there until i physically press and hold the power button to switch it off.

 

Anyone got any ideas why this is? I have to build tons of these machines and its going to be a pain having to do it by hand!

Always the same first response - but have you tried updating the kernel in FOG? Depending on how new the machine is, this can fix many problems - but brand new stuff can be problematic unless you can build your own kernel to include drivers for new hardware. Do these new machines use fire-new components?

Yes, I have updated the Kernal to the newest one, however still no joy. Its an older HP machine, cant remember the model off the top of my head but its about 4 years old I think.

I've imaged many HPs of that age with FOG with decent results, can you find the model? AMD or Intel chipset? I have successfully imaged dx5150, DC7600, DC7700, DC7800, DC7900 with it recently.

We have some DC7600 as well that it works well on, however its the D530 SFF that it wont work on.

865G chipset - that is very old indeed. The combination of possibly iffy old Broadcom NIC plus the ICH5 ATA controller may be problematic. Are you using SATA or PATA HDDs? I have imaged machines with the same chipsets with our FOG server, but not for a couple of years now so haven't checked compatibility since.

Chuck the HDD in another known working machine and grab the image from there?

Ano, unfortunatly there is no funding for new machines (as always!) so we are trying to do the best we can with what we have!

 

We are using PATA HDDs could try SATA.

 

Irritable Tech, would that work? Thought it might scew up the NIC drivers.

Fog just attempts to book what hardware is presented to it, and copies the 0 & 1s. Just make sure you don't boot into windows in the wrong hardware, 'cos you'll lose your nice image.

 

It's just the data you are after, so will work fine. It's after that, when you are deploying you'll need to consider drivers, once the OS boots.

Thanks for the suggestion. I gave it a go and got the image uploaded okay. However, when I go to deploy the image It does the exact same thing as my first problem. Must be something on the machine the FOG Server does not like.

try using the bzimage kitchensink kernal, this normally works.

 

You can use more thsn one kernel aswell.

Changed the Kernal to the kitchensink one and it is working now, saved me alot of time and problems.
