Who is using Linux

Does anyone know how many schools in the UK use Linux ?

We use it quite a bit for servers, but not for desktops. However, with the mess that is Windows 8 it's looking like it may be back as an option for our next desktop OS upgrade.

I would say it's getting to the stage where quite a proportion of schools have something running linux.

 

When you look at all the Appliances, and embeded devices that are out there then it's prolific.

 

We have been running Linux since 1998, first production system was a RHL Box running squid on a P100 Pentium. It was also the firewall and mail server.

And I am presently sitting in a campsite in Cumbria on Linux laptop.

We have a onelan box for our digital signage and I have a Linux workstation that I made to sort out a nas we had that failed in work that's quite useful, I've also played about with freenas and openfiler as well when looking into storage solutions before here

My last place was heavily linux backend - we used it for everything as virtualization platform through to web and file servers.

I suspect most places are using Linux somewhere even if they don't realise it, given its prevalence in all kinds of network appliances and devices. Certainly we've got one or two systems running it here and there.

 

I don't know, myself, of anywhere that has intentionally moved their entire client & server base to Linux, though. Certainly for us, given the low low cost of Microsoft educational licences it would be difficult to justify as a cost saving exercise.

They're a big advocate for open source schools, as well as showing some schools that have tried/or are trying it currently.

 

Whether full way, or replacing certain software etc etc

It's not just about the cost of licensing - older hardware that runs terribly on newer versions of windows is usually quite sprightly on linuxes.

I absolutely hate throwing away "good" hardware, Instead binning 60 laptops I'll keep 20 for spares and run centos on the others.

I run all our old home laptops on linux, last time I had a windows one it was grinding to a halt with AV/Amal..
