USB TO PS2 convertor for old KVM switch

I have an old KVM switch which only takes PS2 connections. Need to connect new server which only has USB. Had a USB to PS2 Adapter lying around so tried that. All seems to work except when I try to use the "\" key. It doesnt like it!!!

Tried another adapter I bought off Ebay and same thing.

 

Does anyone know of an adaptor that will work and allow the use of all keystrokes? I have googled and there are many that purport to do it but I wanted to know if anyone can say from experience which ones work (and where to get it from).

Are you sure it isn't anything to do with the keyboard settings in Windows (or whichever OS you're using)? Does a USB directly attached to the server work ok?

 

I ask because the key for \ is in a totally different place on US keyboards. I've got a US spec macbook and I have to keep changing the keyboard layout when I connect to my work PC

I have an 8 port desktop one which is rackmountable with ears that supports ps2 and usb surplus to requirements and could be available for a small cost.

I need a cheap solution. I thought it would work with an adaptor. 6 of our servers are connected via PS2 and only 2 with USB so I dont really want to go replacing the KVM.

I had the same problem, it didn't work with the PS2 -> USB adapters I bought from Maplins so ended up buying a new KVM. Temporarily though, I just kept a usb keyboard and mouse next to the server and plugged them into which ever server I needed at the time. Not tidy or pretty but it did the job.

Thats what I'm doing at the moment. Longer term I guess I will have to look at replacing the KVM

You could look to see if you could buy some new cables for the KVM which went to USB instead of PS2 like @Plexar says - not sure how old or what brand your current KVM is?

 

The new Belkin one we bought has a mixture of the 2 in it.

I had the same problem but got one from cpc that worked ok. I think it was this one but cannot check till September as I am not in work as term time only.

The difference was it said it was compatable with windows 7 or 2008. I forget. Please dont get angry if I am wrong as its been 6 months and I am working off the top of my head.

I went through this pain a few months back, and after some digging came up with some facts I wasn't aware of. Namely:

 

1. Unless your device came with it's own dedicated adaptor then it probably won't work as..

2. USB is a protocol and not a direct hardware connection like PS/2, so the signals being sent via it (PS/2) via USB probably won't work very well, if at all.

 

I got 2 different adaptors before I found all of this out

I went through this on friday as well as I moved all my server from pedestal to rackmount.

 

My rack mounted kvm is ps/2 only and the T710 I have is usb only.

 

The ps/2 to usb adapter I had been using on my swg-1200 works fine.
