In DNS if you have multiple zones, e.g. - "Domain.local" "Domain.com" etc How do you configure DNS so hosts from each zone can ping hosts from a different zone without entering the FQDN? I understand you can add multiple DNS suffix's in DHCP option, but this isn't an option for me.

Thanks

Not sure exactly what your after, but for A DNS server to respond it has to know what is being asked for

if you have 4 domains

a.com

b.com

c.com

e.com

and ask DNS for host

how does it know if you want a response from a,b,c or e.

Yeah I understand it wouldnt know where to respond from, I just wasn't sure if there was an option in DNS for it to search all zones on the dns server for the host, but I guess not then.

well no I don't think so as you could have www.a.com and www.b.com and www.c.com and if you searched for www it wouldn't know what to respond

I don't think you have to do anything. And as you say, entering the FQDN works which is correct.

If the two zones were in different domains, then a trust would be needed.
