Will this hard drive work on a core i3 setup?

WDC WD800JD-08LSA0 is the name of the hard drive that i've found on device manager under disk, I was wondering if it will be transferable to my new machine, it currently has windows xp installed, or will i have to get windows 7 on it?

If a quick Google search is anything to go by - yes the hard drive will work. It's a SATA hard drive so will work in any modern system.

 

Now for the bad news...

 

Although the hard drive itself will work, you will run in two problems.

 

1) Drivers. The new chipset is almost certainly going to need new drivers and XP is more than likely going to blue screen with out them. If you have an XP install disk then the best answer is to do a repair install of XP over the top of the existing install (don't worry you won't loose anything so long as it is a repair install).

 

2) Licencing. Unless you have a full retail copy of XP bought separately in a shop then you are not actually allowed to transfer Windows to a new machine, regardless to whether or not you can get it working. Licensing rules means you either need to purchase a new retail copy of Windows that can go on any future machines you purchase, or buy an OEM copy when you buy the bare bones system that will be (officially) restricted to use with the new computer.

 

 

The only other thing to mention is - if you are running XP, don't forget to set the SATA controller to run in Legacy mode in the BIOS. XP really hates native SATA.

What about if i want to do a fresh install of windows 7?

So long as you have the properly licensed media, I can't see any problems. Win7 doesn't care which SATA mode you use.
