File server migration

Hi

 

We are looking to migrate the file server to a new server. I am planning to use robocopy but they are so many commands, could somebody point me what switches I need to copy all files and take permissions with them. The plan is to move the files and run again to to copy everything that has changed.

It doesn’t answer your question but what edition of Windows Server are you running?

 

If its Enterprise or higher you could do the same using DFS-R (Replication) and get it to do the migration, just setup a namespace add the two servers let it replicate over and then take out one of the servers.

Server 2008 R2, I am moving this over to our VMware environment and want to remove Dfs and we replicate the SAN when it's virtual

replace the server names the first one is the source the second one is the target.

 

Personally I would setup the new server identically as the old one (in terms of shares). Run the script to do an initial sync of data which will take a while. Then rename the old server and change its IP then change the IP and Name of the new server to the old one which then saves the need to change unc paths etc loads.

 

If you run that script more then once it will only copy what has changed.
