Wireless Issues

Evening everyone,

 

I'm having a fairly longstanding issue with the wireless connection in one of our departments.

 

We use wireless in our PE department to allow them to take a register when in changing rooms. Unfortunately i've come unstuck with the problem it seems to have developed.

 

The problem that we have is......The wireless will work fine to begin with for around half an hour. The signal will then gradually weaken until there is no signal at all.

 

I have tried the obvious things, i've swapped the WAP out for another and the supposedly faulty box has sat in another area of the school and worked perfectly for over a week. Yet as soon as i swap it back, the same fault occurs.

 

I've tested the main link back to the switch, and I have a PC running on it that has worked perfectly fine as well.

 

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

what are you using? WEP? WPA? what access point and client device are you using?

Might be a interference issue. Is there anything in the area that might be chucking out RF? Microwaves, cordless phones, walkie talkies, etc.

I may be misreading this but if you swap the AP with another and they both work OK why swap them back?

Ric - apologies, when i swap the two wireless access points the fault remains. the points only seem to work when not in the room.

 

With regards the hardware we use. The whole department has been given Acer Travelmate C01 Tablet PC's. These have in built wireless devices. The Access point we use is a D-link box i cannot remember the exact model number off the top of my head though, but we are using WEP.

 

The problem hasn't always existed. The system has been in place for around 18 months, and the problem has only existed for around the last 6 weeks. There has been some work done in the area, and it's possible that something has been put into the building which is now interfering with the wireless, I will check it tomorrow.

If it only happened in the last 6 weeks and there has been changes in the building that is most likely the cause

 

New metal/electricals in particular could cause issues

As said before, it sounds like an environmental issue, could be just a case of working through what actually is causing it.
