WDS Services will not start Help Please!!

Hi all, hopefully someone can advise me on a 2008 R2 WDS problem that I am having.

 

I am in the process of decommissioning an old 2003 R2 server that ran WDS and Ghost. I have uninstalled the WDS role, Ghost and the old RemoteInstall folder. The 2003 R2 server is still on the domain. I have installed a new server and I have installed the WDS role. However, I cannot get the WDS services to start. I am recieving the following error in the final stage of the WDS Server configuration in the WDS console:

 

"The Service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"

 

When I check the event viewer the folling errors are present with regards to WDS:

 

"An error occurred while trying to start the Windows Deployment Services Server". - Event ID 257

 

"An error occurred while trying to initialize provider WdsImgSrv from C:\Windows\System32\WdsImgSrv.dll Windows Deployment Server will be shut down". - Event ID 513

 

"An error occurred while trying to initialize the Windows Deployment Services Image Server". - Event ID 258

 

"An error occurred while refreshing settings". - Event ID 266

 

I would appreciate any advice on this as I am preparing to deploy Windows 7 during the summer holidays. I have had WDS working perfectly in a test environment and have compared settings to the test environment servers. Could it be something to do with WDS or RIS previously running in the live environment?

Are there any other services running on the box? DHCP? SCCM?

hi - no other services are running on the server. It is a clean install 2008 R2 will all updates. Only WDS role is installed on the server. Since my last post I have tried uninstalling the WDS role, took the server off the domain, changed the server name, added the server back onto the domain and added the WDS role back on. Still the same errors in the event log. I have tried adding a different user account into the WDS Services option in the Services mmc. The user account that I added was a member of domain admins, and enterprise admins. When I tried to start the service with this account i got the error:

 

"A privilage that the service requires to function properly does not exist in the service account configuration. You may use the services microsoft management console snap in and the local security settings mmc (secpol.msc) to view the service configuration and account configuration".

 

I really appreciate your reply as I really need to get this moving.

Check the permissions on your deployment share, the only time I saw these errors it was because my deployment share was completely borked from a raid failure!

Share Permissions:

 

Authenticated Users - Read

System - Full

Administrator (local machine) - Full

WDSServer - full

 

NTFS Permisions:

 

Authenticated Users - Read, Execute - List Folders - Read

System - Full

Administrator (Local Machine) - Full

WDSServer - Full

 

The settings I have on the DHCP Server are as follows:

 

Scope Options:

 

003 Router - XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

066 Boot Server Host Name - XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

067 Bootfile Name - boot\x86\wdsnbp.com

006 DNS Servers - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

015 DNS Domain Name - XXXXXXXX.local

 

Server Options:

Cheers for that Sted, but no joy I'm afraid. The only thing that I think it could be is that the old original WDS server is still up and running on the domain. The server is 2003 R2 All WDS and Ghost services are stripped off the box. Although these services are no longer installed I was thinking that the domain/AD is still addressing WDS as legacy mode or something like that. The only thing is I cannot decomisssion the server fully until the last day of term. I now thinking of preparing a plan B incase WDS still does not start when I decommision the old server. I am looking at FOG.
