djones Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 What size cabinet (width/depth) would be needed for a Dell R510 server? I take it that it should also need a mesh door rather than a solid type? It will also have the switches etc and a rack mount UPS - are there any issues with this?

It will also have the switches etc and a rack mount UPS - are there any issues with this? Please tell me you're not trying to mount a server into a wall-mount network cabinet. Your issues off the top of my head are: 1) Noise. 2) Insufficient airflow. Even with a mesh door for intake, your outflow will be restricted. If you went for a full mesh cabinet. 3) Weight (if wall-mounted). 4) Plus serviceability. Size-wise, server length plus 20-40 cm depending on where (and how adjustable) the posts are in the cabinet.

How many servers are you going to be mounting? also how many switches you probably want a 24 or 42U rack. One thing is make sure you put the UPS's in the bottom! EDIT: the dell R510 has two sizes depending on the model I would go for something about a meter deep something like this Chassis 4 and 8 HDD Chassis 3.40 H x 17.19 W x 24.00 D (in) 86.4 H x 436.6 W x 609.6 D (mm) 12 HDD Chassis 3.42 H x 17.53 W x 26.17 D (in) 86.7 H x 445.2 W x 664.6 D (mm) Edited July 2, 2012 by glennda 1
twin--turbo Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Always go for 1000 Deep on a server cab for future proofing, 800 wide is good but 600 will surfice. Yes mesh door front and rear, And the UPS should be mounted at the very bottom. No Problem with putting the switch in too. 1

One thing I would say is there is a big difference between a cheap cab and a quality built one. Just simple things like the u's are marked out etc.
m25man Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Prism only do 1000 or 1200 deep server cabinets now the 800mm ones are specked as data cabinets. However, some of the Dells rail kits do not extend to a 1000mm cabinet, the result is you have to move the uprights closer together! So before you go throwing everything into your new cabinet get your R510 rail kit and offer it up inside your new 1000mm cab first! it can be a hell of a job to change once fully loaded! 1
