windows update is blocking internet access

Got a Vista pro machine that is having problems accessing the Internet via ie9 and firefox after running windows update, defo has an Internet connection and Skype works fine so it must be down to a update, if I restore the machine to a couple of weeks ago the all is fine. I'll have to uninstall all the recent updates one by one till I find the one causing the problem. Before I start has anyone else come across this and if so what update is causing the problem?

Just if anyone is interested the problem was caused by Internet explorer security update KB2699988, quite common problem so I've read on a few forum's
