Laptop with SSD

Im looking at replacing the 3 laptops we use in our IT Office with ones with Solid State Drives. Is anyone else using laptops with a SSD? if so any recomendations on any good manufactures? HP or Dell etc?

i think it often works out cheaper to buy with a hdd and but the ssd separately iirc it was an option on my dell but cost more than buying the drive myself (and as my laptop has 2 hdd bays i can keep the big 750 as well lol)

 

just checked 256 drive dell wanted £300 extra (including deleting the 750gb) its about £175 from crucial

We just bought 101 Dell Latitude E5420's with SSDs in them. Just imaging one now for some speed testing.

What are the specs of the laptops you have at the moment? Have an old core2duo with 3gb ram and ran like a pig until i put an SSD it in. Runs sooo quick right now. So maybe you could get away with just upgrading the HDDs to SSDs instead of buying whole laptops?

All our existing staff laptops are Core2Duos with 1GB RAM running XP. They are ok, but not great. These new laptops are giving me about 300Mbps speeds from the SSD compared to about 80 on the hard disk editions we got previously.

 

Whether or not an SSD is any use depends on what type of connection you have for it. If it is SATA2, you will see a reasonable speed increase for sure, maybe extending the machine's life by a year or so. If SATA1 then its not worth it at all.

Blazingly fast. The slowest component is the CPU, and that's a mobile i5!

Were they from Dell direct? what price were they per unit?

Well... Some were, for one of the schools, and some weren't, they went through Northgate IS. Price was about the same both ways. We paid about £680 each for them.
