Davit2005 Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Looking at replacing our central switch Is it true the 2910al only does Port based ACL's. We don't really need the expansion possibility of the 5406zl due to our building/cabling layout. We would like to seperate our network out to provide security seperated BYOD vLANS and eventually split the production network up to smaller segments too. Would prefer just to have the switch doing the work i.e. Routing between vLANS, pointing clients to our Domain DHCP server and that dishing out all the IP's for the seperate vLANS etc. Anyone using the 2910al for such tasks?

Cache Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 I bought a 2910al about a year ago and asked my supplier when I bought it specifically for one which could do inter-vlan routing and that was what I got. I have to be honest and say I haven't ventured very far in the actual setup of it, currently I only have the default vlan and one extra vlan which is used for our guest wifi (which plugs into one port then out into another to act as a mini firewall/proxy). 1

Personally I would go for something a bit beefier at the core then a 2910. I would class that as more of an Edge or near edge switch. Something more like the 5500 range which will defiantly do what you are after. 1

Price doesn't seem to be much different from a 5406zl with the comparable connectivity we need. Back to the research :-$
