10.6 Server... on an iMac

Hi all,

 

Has anyone been able to install SL Server onto an iMac before? I am currently trying to do so, so that I can practise the upgrade to Lion without actually just jumping right into it in the summer and potentially nerfing everything up. But unfortunately, upon trying to install it I am told that i'm unable to install max osx server onto this computer. No other details indicated.. except the install disc which specifically says 'Mac Mini' osx server install disc. It is looking like this disc is purely for installing osx server onto a mac mini.. but surely, just surely, I must be able to install this onto other Apple hardware?! I am not hopeful - but anyone that has an input on this your views are very, very much appreciated.

 

EDIT: Also eventually, I'm looking into the question of virtualising osx server, is this possible? Do I need Apple hardware to run it on? Would it be possible with VSphere etc?

Any disc supplied with an Apple machine will only run on that machine/model.

 

However, you may be able edit the plist file that the machine uses, to tell it to run on the imac model that you have.

 

You are using an install disk that accompanied another (more recent) Mac. In this case, rip the disk, use "Show Package Contents" on the installer and find the file Info.plist. If you have Xcode installed you'll have access to Property List Editor.app, but you can also edit Info.plist in any text editor. What you'll be looking for is a key-value pair that is used for checking the install restriction. Change the value, save, and burn the image onto a DVD (or for speed install from a USB stick, but that needs some more steps).

HodgeHi answered the first bit, secondly, you will need to run the virtual server on apple hardware, ive had a look into it and it was extremely expensive when compared the buying physical servers. Not sure about Vsphere.

ESXi only supports virtualizing 10.6 on Apple's obsolete Xserve.
