*Help* Procurve 5406 VLAN routing problem

Hi there

 

We're setting up 2 VLANs on our network.

 

Data on VLAN 1

Voice on VLAN 2

 

Setting up our Procurve 5406 to act as the core switch.

We've set VLAN 1 to be IP 10.0.4.1 255.0.0.0 for our data network and VLAN 2 to be IP 172.16.0.200 255.255.0.0 for our voice network.

 

I've enabled IP routing on the 5406 and set a static default route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.0.1.254 to our Smoothwall for Internet connectivity.

 

A PC on VLAN 1 (set with default gateway of 10.0.4.1) can connect to the switch by using either the 10.0.4.1 or the 172.16.0.200 address and can ping the Smoothwall on 10.0.1.254 and access the Internet.

 

A PC on VLAN 2 (set with the default gateway of 172.16.0.200) can also see the switch on either address, ping the smoothwall on 10.0.1.254 and access the internet.

 

So we can assume the static default route is working fine, but currently the PC on VLAN can't see anything on VLAN 2 other than the vLAN 2 port on the 5406 and the PC on VlAN 2 can't see anything on VLAN 1 other than the VLAN 1 port on the 5406 and the Smoothwall on 10.0.1.254.

 

With IP Routing being turned I thought the 5406 would automatically route between the two VLANs.

 

The current config on the 5406 is as follows:

What I have I missed to get the 2 VLANs talking to each other?

Yes, each scope provides the ip of the relevant VLAN a the default gateway.

is one of them setup as the default vlan? or management. I've not set this up in a while but i have a feeling you can't route between the default vlan (i.e the original vlan) and a second one. You would have to create two new vlans and route between them. Also I think you can't route between a management vlan and any other vlan. Its been a while since i was setting them up.

Thanks for your help, but got it sorted in the end and really should follow the advice I give to all out staff...

 

 

 

... I turned the core switch off an turned it on again...

 

I think it just needed a reboot to apply the IP routing (which i did after giving each VLAN an ip)... All works as expected now!
