iPad Youtube app through proxy (Smoothwall)

Hi All,

 

We're having problems getting iPads to play Youtube videos through our (non transparent) proxy. It works fine when I connect to our dev wireless that uses no proxy.

 

However on our normal school wide wireless we just get the error "The operation could not be completed". Looking through the logs on Smoothwall there doesn't appear to be any errors occurring though.

 

.......Perhaps it's a firewall issue? Does the Youtube app use different ports?

 

Anyone had similar issues?

I believe all apps use a variety of ports, it might be worth trying to allow the device through the firewall and see if that works, if it does you know the issue is there not the filter.

 

I'd probably put money on it being firewall not filter from my own experience with ipads and smoothwall filtering / firewall.

You will need to whitelist a domain (I think it is c.youtube.com) for those users - the youtube app has a major bug in it where it fails to compy with HTTP standards, so G3 can't understand it

Hmmmm I tried whitelisting 'c.youtube.com' but the same thing still happens.

Did you try the firewall yet? I'm curious to know how you get it working now

The firewall is out of my control (and I have no idea how it's setup : P) as I am but a humble minion. The network manager is off for the next few days but I'll poke him when he gets back!

The issue with iOS is the way that it handles the proxy. It works for Safari and the Mail application but the forwarding proxy is not enforced for individual apps for example youtube which tries to go direct. This is why opening up the ports on the firewall allows the Youtube app to work. So adding c.youtube.com will not work
