Slow account issues

We use an RM SmartCache and it is forever logging errors about authentication requests not being able to be done quick enough. We've never figured out why, but have found lots of people on the 'net with the same problem. I have started looking at using the disk quota stuff recently as some people's "My Documents" are getting out of hand. When you go in to the quota bit, it takes a good 5 seconds or so before it starts resolving any of the UUID's to actual account names. I've been on other networks where it is instant. Are the two likely to be related? The DC's are both Server 2008 R2 and the "quota" server is Server 2003. Any thoughts please?
