Software (Scratch) wont install using GPO

Apologies if this is in the wrong place. I’m trying to install a piece of software called Scratch (from an MSI), using a Machine based GPO deployed from a Windows Server 2008R2 server, to a Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 PC, and I’m getting nowhere with it.

 

I have created the GPO and the software is on the server on a share, and I have linked it to the GPO. I have created a test OU and assigned the GPO to the OU, and put a test machine in the OU.

 

I have verbose logging turned on, on the test PC, and when it starts up it flashes up that it’s installing the software but it fails to do so.

I have ran RSOP, and it shows a yellow triangle against the install, but when I view the Error Information tab all it lists is the date and time the PC booted up. Under Cause it lists the following: -

This application was applied due to the following conditions:

The application was assigned.

Its language was English.

 

Does anyone have any ideas why it doesn’t work? Any advice on where to look for troubleshooting? Has anyone tried installing this program and got it to work?

I'm no GPO expert but will it install manually OK - will it install from a .bat file ok - this is the .bat file I use

 

msiexec /i "%PACKAGES%\scratchmsi\scratch1.4.msi" /qb!

(replace the /qb! for whatever degree of silence/unsilence you want/need )

 

I imagine its some sort of permission thinghy so if you can assign the installer maximum rights that'll probably help

I just run it from a share on the server and dont bother with a local install just a shortcut to it. That is on XP at the moment but I presume that would work on W7 like that as well.

Ive managed to deploy it using a script to check whether its currently installed and then install it using MSIEXEC if not.

 

But, I now have it installed on a server and will be sharing it and running it from there.

msi with gpo worked fine here with server 2003 and xp clients...

Update - I can now get the software to install from the MSI, but it now seems to ignore the .ini file and doesn't copy it over during install. Im starting to hate this software....

Nope. The MSI is 'supposed' to copy the .ini file from the install folder to Program Files during install, except it doesn't! I might look at a way of copying it over after install.

The software itself is brilliant (as in what it does) but there have been issues with it on locked down domain setups that has made a lot of sysadmins go down the network share approach.

 

Since I've a modified .ini , I just copy my own .ini version over to the Scratch program folder after the msi install anyway.

Thanks SimpleSi, just reminded me I had not set the Visible Drives setting, will go and do that now. Great software, just finished teaching Y3 groups how to use it, last session making a game on thier own and most managed it! Slightly off exact topic but do you share the finished games and how without having to install Scratch, would like to showcase it to parents.
