Really Slow Mac - Nothing in Preferences Folder in Library!

I've tried to have a look in the preferences folder in the library of a macbook thats running really slow...and there's nothing there. How can this be? I'm really confused!!

Reinstall, there are lots of things that can go wrong under the hood of a mac in the texty linuxy bits.

Try out Home and try running the Maintenance scripts and permissions repair as that can help.

How long has it been since the mac was wiped? OSX like all OS's gets clogged after a while and really needs to be wiped to sort it out.

If you use file vault / encryption etc, you would need to decrypt and backup any data you want to keep to an external hard drive and then I would just do a fresh install. Would be a lot easier then trying to fix it by running maintenance scripts etc
