Hi

Has anyone managed to get Skype working on the Ipad, I can do this at home using Skype for Ipad but in school it won't sign in, can anyone help?

Take a look at the Skype website; you should find a discussion around this; Skype for Windows works fine with a proxy, for iOS it does not. I am not qualified to say if this is a problem with Skype or iOS, although I know from experience that apps running under iOS don't always play nice with proxies.

If you use Lancs CC/Cleo (OneConnect) as your ISP then it is not allowed at all.

Reason given is the high volume of network traffic that was being generated on the network by multi Skype users.

We pursued this last year and as far as I am aware the restriction is still in place.

To further expand on Roger's comment, you can also sometimes find that Skype is used when idle to support the calls of others ... and will still eat into your bandwidth. Whilst this is played down due to the sheer volume of possible idle machines out there ... it is something to be considered.

The lack of ability to restrict what other devices may be connecting to the idle machine is often seen as a flaw and with Skype noted to have previous flaws (buffer overrun on the Windows Client, for example) then because it is sometimes impossible to guarantee the version of any client on the network an operator / company might choose to block it.

This will either be done by blocking access to authenticating servers, via ports or both. Skype authenticates against the login servers first before giving you access to and announcing on the supernodes. The authentication is first on port 80 but on failure to connect (i.e. not refusal on proxy) it will attempt on port 443.
