Ryan233 Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Good Afternoon everyone Well i have recently gone to a new school, i recently took over the support for, There server is Windows 2003 SP2 and i would like to update this to Windows 2003 R2. I would like to do this soon for some extra features like print management, If anyone can answer the following question it would be very much appreciated How easy is it upgrade from Windows 2003 SP2 to Windows 2003 R2? Would i lose any data or shares? Anyone get any tutorials on how to do this?

fiza Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 (edited) If its 32bit 2003 SP2 which for a primary School would be about right then there is no upgrade path to 2008 R2 as it is a 64bit O/S. You would need to do a fresh install. I may be tempted to make a normal pc into another 2003 DC and then transfer dhcp, dns,fsmo,files etc over to the PC. You would have to reinstall Applications. You could then rebuild the original server as a 2008 R2 server and then transfer all roles to it from the PC. This again depends on how old the server is and whether it has 64bit capability. If its really old you may have to look at buying a new server. Edited May 24, 2012 by fiza

Would i lose any data or shares? Anyone get any tutorials on how to do this? 2003 SP2 to 2003 SP2 R2 is very straight forward and you don't even need to restart. You cannot do a direct upgrade from 2003 SP2 to 2008 SP1 R2 as others have mentioned. 2003 is x86 and 2008 R2 x64. You have several choices - upgrade from 2003 SP2 to 2003 SP2 R2 which will help in the short term. In the longterm either buy a new server with 2008 R2 or you'll need to create a temporary server, transfer FSMO roles and data, wipe the real server, then put it all back again. These are your only options.
edutech4schools Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 (edited) Can I just jump in as it sounds like this will be the first time you have set up a new server or migrated a server and you are heading for trouble doing this on a live set up. I would get a decent desktop or laptop install vmware server, install a server os on the laptop as a virtual machine and learn to migrate the systems over. EDIT: While typing two more posts have been added. Although it will be easy to upgrade to R2, you will not have much choice soon and will need to migrate to 2008R2. Ryan233 Posted May 24, 2012 Author Posted May 24, 2012 I have Migration server roles and stuff before, but i have never updated to Windows 2003 R2. Personally i think it would be better for me and the school to just update the current server to Windows 2003 R2. the school do not have the funds to buy a new server and the school is actually tiny in size. we only have about 300 pupils in the whole school. I have normally just brought new server and then migrated the data over but in this school i cannot do this. I manage another 8 schools, but there have funds and there have more then one server.
