Demoting Servers

We currently had 5 domain controllers on our network i dont no why as i have just taken over.

 

Now i have demoted 2 of them today and we use bginfo on the backgrounds. When some teachers and pupils are logging on i can see by bginfo its trying to logon to one of the servers that have been demoted.

 

Why would this be?

 

Also another thing is my documents is coming up saying \\servername\usename\documents not available. This has been changed in group policy and it was working yesterday i have been through gp a number of times and everything is correct.

tried that its still doing the same. Looked in dns and one of the servers have gone but the one which seems to be causing the problems is still showing as a name server

remove it - also in dhcp is the server you demoted specified as a dns server?

so can i just go into DNS and click delete? and no the server is not in DHCP as a DNS server

 

do i just do this for the name server one or every record with that server name?

Just do it under name server I would. also check on the machines struggling that they have not got static IP's set with dns pointing to that server

It could also be to do with logon scripts in your NETLOGON share. Typically you may host BGINFO files within a folder or indeed the root of the NETLOGON share.

 

\\DEMOTED-SERVERNAME\NETLOGON

 

Of course you'd just need to update the scripts to one of your other remaining DCs.
