Terastation Backup Configuration Help

Now then,

 

Can some kind soul please spot the problem in the following scenario:

 

I have a Terastation Pro II hooked up to the network in order to perform nightly backups.

 

I have set-up shares on the Terastation thus; "mon$", "tue$", "wed$", "thu$", "fri1..4$".

 

I have integrated the Terastation into the Active Directory domain and limited access to the shares to the Domain Admin group (Read/Write access).

 

I have run a Robocopy script to backup the contents of a folder to the relevant share, the command line is below:

 

"ROBOCOPY \\pdc2\homedrives-pupils$ \\Ts-htgl44a\thu$\Pupils /mir /sec /r:20 /log:\\Ts-htgl44a\thu$\thu-backup.log"

 

The problem is that of the 100+Gb of data that should be copied, only 44Gb was successfully copied :?

 

The robocopy log is jam-packed with errors like this:

 

0 \\pdc2\homedrives-pupils$\

2007/05/26 09:17:17 ERROR 5 (0x00000005) Copying NTFS Security to Destination Directory \\pdc2\homedrives-pupils$\

Access is denied.

 

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have exclusive access set on your folder redirection perhaps?

We don't use folder redirection. Pupils get a mapped home-drive. The administrator group has full access on all the pupil folders.

 

That's what is confusing about ERROR5 Access Denied error.

 

Anybody had any similar problems with Robocopy or Terastation?

We use ntbackup here rather than robocopy.

Ntbackup with BackupAssist to Terrastation only need one share on the Terrastation and BackupAssist takes care of the naming of files and deletion etc...

Try using the /ZB switch with ROBOCOPY. This will sometimes let it copy files in 'backup' mode.

 

I also use Terastations for backup and they seem to work well with BackupAssist. There's no need to do AD integration as BackupAssist can log directly on the the box itself prior to backup.

If I can't suss robocopy, I may have to think about *gulp* spending money on BackupAssist!

You can try BackupAssist for free for 30 days, so there's no excuse not to have a look!

 

As far as the permissions problem, it may be that students are modifying the permissions on their own work. There are a few things that can be done about this;

 

1 - Lock down the UI on student PCs so they don't have command line or 'security tab' access. They must also be restricted from executing non-approved scripts/programs which might modify security on files.

 

2 - Modify the root share permission that students connect to so that they get no greater than 'modify' or 'change' access (ie not Full Controll). That should prevent security changes, but also interferes with folder redirection.

 

3 - Run an overnight script (preferably prior to backup), which takes ownership of all files in the user area and makes sure the right groups have the right access (eg Administrators: Full, System: Full)
