Office 365 for education

Although SkyDrive is not included in Office 365, it’s important to note that your current SkyDrive users will not lose anything they store in SkyDrive after your establishment upgrades to Office 365 for education. Your users will continue to have access to all their files in SkyDrive, plus your establishment will have the added benefits of SharePoint Online with powerful features like intranet sites, seamless integration with Exchange Online and Lync Online, as well as a rich set of enterprise-level administrative tools not found in SkyDrive and other consumer services.

Yours sincerely,

Live@edu team

I'm struggling to get my head around this...

Can anyone confirm what the status of skydrive will be in office 365 for education?

Currently all live@edu accounts get skydrive and it is used heavily by our students. Will that not be the case in the future?

Is it not a case that if they have it then they keep it, but new accounts won't get it?

Yes that's how I read the email above.

But that pretty much means we might as well drop it now as a educational tool.

A real shame as it was starting to really pick up momentum with students and teachers as a sharing and backup tool.

I got an email from the Live@edu team about this sent on 17 May - if you want I can forward the entire email to you -the text of the email does tell us not to circulate some of the information too widely!

From discussion the SkyDrive is an end user product linked to hotmail not an education product linked to live@edu, so the data could be stored on any servers, not like live@edu which is stored in the EU (Irelend & Amsterdam) which has held me back from migrating my school.

Yup came through via email as part of a SkyDrive update... as mentioned above a real shame that SkyDrive gets wiped out just as the APIs etc finally get released so we can integrate it into other services :(

Saw the My Files section on Office 365 in a demo the other day... didn't look the friendliest thing in the world I have to admit. Not sure if it was because the demo was on with an admin account but there's a lot of links and buttons on the Sharepoint feature, have a feeling it might look a bit overwhelming for some users...

Currently feeling a little bit uncertain with Office 365... during the demo the words website and VLE were mentioned but the features I saw couldn't replace either... need to find where it sits neatly amongst other platforms we already have I think.

Damn! I'm pretty sad about this if its true.

We've just completed some CPD training sessions on how to use skydrive to share documents with students and back up personal data.

The teachers loved it and I was just about to roll out the desktop client to all their laptops and the app on their ipads.

The idea for the future would also have been cloud storage available to students via a live id windows 8 login.

Yup same here... personally I'd expect some sort of similar access to the Office 365 Sharepoint libraries but that would be too simple eh :p
