how Many networking points ??? Server ???

seem to be having a problem finding out how many ports are actually on this server !

 

BT Business Direct - HP DL380 G7 E5620 P410I/256/4/DVDRW (470065-482)

 

Just a base spec , but ideally want 4 networking ports minimum ! .

 

any one have one of these ? The 6gb RAM version specifys 4 ports .. Where this 4gb version differs on all websites !

 

Am i right to assume they all use the same MB , so the ports should really be the same ?

The spec on that page lists 4:

Networking

Network adapter - PCI Express x4 - Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet - Ethernet Ports : 4 x Gigabit Ethernet

 

Certainly the 380 G7s I've got have 4 onboard Intel NICs, I would presume other G7s would maintain that.

It has 4x NICs - a pair of the NICs share a single controller though so you will in theory only get 2Gb/s total.

 

The idea of having 2x NICs per controller is that one of the NICs could burn out/ect and you wouldn't lose the whole controller when using NIC teaming/bonding.

can some one answer me this , i currently have a company saying the above is an old server and out of date .

 

They instead are trying to sell me this

Is it me or is it exactly the same except it has 6gb ram instead of 4gb ?

We run the HP DL165 G7s (very simlar just 1U instead of 2Us) and arn't having any issues with the 8 or so VMs we have on each server so unless your work loads are particularly bandwith heavy there won't be much need for more NICs.

Complete overkill, how often are any of your servers saturating a 1Gb link?

 

I've got a NIC expansion card in mine more for redundancy than anything, and to free up some NICs for Live Migration and Cluster Communications. If you're doing a Failover Cluster on an iSCSI SAN you'll probably need an extra card, but there's no way you need one NIC per VM.

Also, those two servers are both DL380 G7s, so are both the same. The processor in both is the Intel Xeon E5620, so both the same. Anyone telling you that one is outdated compared to the other is lying. Note that the 6Gb model only lists two NIC ports, as well.

Thanks for all the information people , dont like lyers so maybe i should be changing suppliers !!

 

Its quite a big order after specing all the ram,HDD's etc .
