andydis Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Hi all, Over the last year i have been creating a DATACENTRE ( based off schools site), after talking to some IT techies they would like access to a few pre-setup virtual machines as a test bed. Looking online companies charge like £30 per month for 1 virtual private server with lots of limits. # I was thinking of starting a company and smashing this price down Would anybody be interested ?
RabbieBurns Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Welcome to the OpenITC Website - Home Page low spec server right enough but enough to play with
andydis Posted May 18, 2012 Author Posted May 18, 2012 oh rabbie i was talking more about microsoft O/S with hyper-v and internal private networks.
RabbieBurns Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 fair enough for that I found it more cost effective to just buy a case and chuck in 16gb of RAM and install Datacenter 2008R2 and use that for my labs.
CSNM-Carl Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Is the school OK with you profiting from using their power, network connectivity, hardware?
andydis Posted May 18, 2012 Author Posted May 18, 2012 the datacentre is not in the school , hence why i put BASED OFFSITE!
CSNM-Carl Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 the datacentre is not in the school , hence why i put BASED OFFSITE! Where have you created a datacentre?
andydis Posted May 18, 2012 Author Posted May 18, 2012 Hi Carl, its in a unit in a local industrial estate, they already had most of the aircon issued sorted so thought thats where best to put it.
Jamman960 Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 £30/mo isn't too bad when you consider thats for a production server where any less than 99.999% uptime is unaceptable and any data loss would result in lawsuits and the rest, I doubt such companies make a huge amount from their £30/mo once everything has been factored in. if on the other hand you're looking at providing VPS's for testing purposes only then fair enough but you'd need to be sure your customers understand what that means.
andydis Posted May 18, 2012 Author Posted May 18, 2012 hi jamman, yes thats exactly what i intend to supply them for a TESTBED.
Edu-IT Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Hi Carl, its in a unit in a local industrial estate, they already had most of the aircon issued sorted so thought thats where best to put it. Is it secure? Does it have decent connectivity? Any redundancy? Fire supression systems etc? ] This is why you pay the premium.
GTX Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Why would people come to you when they can get a full dedi box for around £30 a month from OVH?
cpjitservices Posted June 24, 2015 Posted June 24, 2015 Coming from someone who has hands on experience in building DC's - Data centers usually have to of adhered to certain standards (Fire regs, Security, Building Regs, Data Security etc etc)... test bed or not. I have several ring binders full of design plans and all manner of stuff to do with it. Not an easy task if you want to do it properly.
