Windows 7 on the Rasberry Pi

The article says "A video posted to YouTube shows a recently shipped Raspberry Pi running a Windows 7 virtual desktop, using Citrix XenDesktop 5.6 on a VMware ESXi 5 hypervisor..." click me. Is W7 really running on the Pi or just the Citrix client? I'm not experienced enough to tell from the video.

The credit card-sized computer was running the Debian Squeeze (version 6.0) OS and had Citrix Receiver and the Iceweasel browser preloaded, the poster noted.

 

The approach could allow firms that have to use Windows for legacy reasons to use the £30 Raspberry Pi, which itself cannot run the Microsoft operating system, according to Raspberry Pi Foundation spokeswoman Liz Upton.

 

The Pi is ARM based and there is no released edition of Windows 7 that can run directly on ARM.

It's a virtual desktop from a Xen Farm.

 

However, it's something to consider if you are short on cash for computers in school...

 

Instead of full desktops, just whack in a Pi if you're using virtual desktops. So much cheaper.

Yep - we're using Wyse Xentihs for it, at about £220 a throw, so saving around £180. However, the mutlimedia experience is delivered by the terminal, so I'd be interested to see how the Pi compared to this.

I'd have thought the hardware in the RPi is more than up to the standard of many TCs, the CPU isn't half but but the graphics core is pretty decent for what it is. Can't see why it wouldn't be well up to it, once the Debian port is totally ready.

We've been doing this for a while now, works well. Students even build their own PI cases using the laser cutter in DT!

It's also a cheap way for the kids to access the VDI from outside of the Academy.

I wonder if it would be possible to hack Windows 8 RT to work on the Pi? That is designed for ARM chips....

I think Secure Boot kills that one - I think it's required in the BIOS for RT.

You need a Desktop virtualisation license.
