Selling a 5/6 year old Dell Optiplex, Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, legal copy of XP, 19" Dell TFT. Stuck it on Gumtree for £120, expected to be haggled down a bit.

Someone emails asking what is the lowest I'd let it go for if they collected tonight, I say I'll do £100 if he collects with cash. He comes back with 'what about £80?' Being that I'd already said lowest was £100, I say how about £90, still he comes back with 'I've got £80 and I'll have to buy a keyboard and mouse'

Seriously, am I really over valuing this computer or what? I know prices of used stuff has fallen hugely but I didnt think £90 for that was over the top...maybe I'm wrong

The guy is just pushing to get a lower price is all. I'd say chopping 30% off of the asking price is close to being a bit cheap, but with people's finances the way they are at the moment it's not ridiculous.

Ultimately, the question is: how much does that £10 difference mean to you? Is it worth being rid of the machine and pocketing the £80, or are you prepared to hold out for more but also risking not getting any interest for a while?

If it were me, I'd sell :)

Yeah I know, I'll probably have to let it go for that because I'm fed up of having the thing hanging around and I've not been flooded with interest.

Definitely seems to be a buyers market for second hand kit!

Not sure about whether you've pitched the price correctly, but I blame Phil & Kirsty + that little bald fella for encouraging this "offer a ridiculously low price" culture that is springing up.

There is no issue with that as long as you know you are being cheeky and expect to have to raise the bid. The problem comes from offering a stupidly low price and then getting incredulous that they have to rise a lot above it or only going up by increments of 1% or less thinking they are being shrewd.

Yeah, my experience of haggling is start low, but prepare to meet somewhere in between your first and the sellers first price. These people wouldn't get on very well in a Moroccan market by just sticking to their first price!

a new 19" monitor is about £100

Yeah, but mine isnt widescreen, and only has VGA output. So I'm realistic it isnt worth much.

Actually maybe I should use it at work given how hard it is to buy 4:3 screens!

Finally emailed him back to say ok to £80 and he said he'd already got one with Windows 7 (which will be pirated) from someone else. Shouldnt wait around so long!
