[video] 1980's F1 Much more exciting than now!

I found a goodly selction of clips last night whilst looking for something else, and it occurs to me that F1 racing in the 80's was far more exciting than it is these days. I never realised at the time (I was a teenager) that the cars were skidding around the corners and that the pit stops were so casual (check out the Williams pit crew in 1980!). I am also surprised about how awful the tracks were. Just look at all of the belly panels bottoming out in the first clip! Anyway, I thought that as it's lunch time I'd share these

modern cars still bottom out regularly - kust listen to one of the 2011 RBR cars qualifying, they don't have titanium blocks underneath to produce the pretty sparks... instead they have a plank... which is why Interlagos's main straight looks... odd.

 

I don't necessarily buy into the racing etc being better in the 80s/90s or whatever era you choose... it's different. Aero is the biggest destroyer of 'racing', but it seems you can get around the aero benefit with tyres that actually degrade.

I seem to remember watching F1 in the early 80's, with my dad, and he was saying that the 60's and 70's were better because there was more actual racing, and more excitement. Personally, I don't think there's that much difference....it's just a lot safer.

The 1992 (I think) Monaco battle between Senna and Mansell is the best race I have ever seen, would take something spectacular to beat that.

There's such a difference these days but sometimes you wonder if it needn't be. People say that the modern drivers can't race - true, some can't. Some people say it could never work without aids (DRS for instance). But if drivers were more like Hamilton and Koboyashi, that is entirely rubbished. (see 2007 for the former, and how to overtake without pressing buttons).

 

But yes - racing in the 80s was great to watch, I used to love watching the piquet, prost, senna and mansell battles round my nan's house every other Sunday.
