[sims] SLG - WHat do I need to set this up ?

While I await a call from Capita I thought I would ask the edugeek collective.

 

We are concidering purchasing SLG, now my questions are.

 

Can we host this ourselves? Or are there better options (Primary school 500 children)

How complicated is setup?

Are any microsoft licenses needed, Sharepoint etc??

Any ball park figure on costs?

I can answer some questions.

We host for about 5 schools who use it to varied degrees. So no reason you can't host yourself.

Setup, initially was done by Capita. It wasn't easy but this was in the early SLG days.

Depending on what yuou intend to use it for, there are cheaper, easier to use and tbh more engaging products from Bromcom, TASC and others.

The ONLY reason we are considering SLG as we wan't e-registration in the classroom. We currently have this by using full sims clients in the classrooms and connecting to the Sims admin server via SQL on port 1433 (We have admin/curriculum split)

The LA have decided we can no longer have traffic between Admin/curriculum networks.

 

So our options are: -

LA provide terminal sevices solution and centrally host sims - Both admin and curric access via TS/Citrix (Cost £2000 pa ish)

SLG -we provide ourselves to acheive the same as we are getting now

 

I have no idea about Bromcom or TASC, will they integrate with SIMs or are they products on their own ?

TASC PARS would do what you need and more, it runs on an IIS web server and talks directly to SIMS and allows the teachers computers to access it via their web browser. I think there's an equivalent Bromcom solution called teachers webfolder.

I'm astounded by your LEA though, for staff to get any access to SIMS either by Terminal services, SLG or any other solution you need access from the admin to the curriculum network, even if it's only ports 80/443 for web based communication. I thought split networks had disappeared years ago, but obviously not.

I would also go down the BromCom 'teachers webfolder sd' route as it saves on installation and maintenance of SIMS .net on each workstation and costs far less than SLG.

When I had a quote for SLG, it was 5 figures for the license.

We were told the same, but apparently they're not (have now had this confirmed by our supplier), see the recent thread here.
