MAC + windows domain. home folders.

I'm trying to get one of our mac's (10.7.3) on our windows network.

 

So far I've managed to join the domain & home folder is getting mapped by smb. with thanks do the doc posted on here

 

Is there anyway to map the drive via smb without creating the shell folders? (Desktop Documents Downloads Library Movies Music Pictures Public)

 

I'd also like to map additional shared driver & a printer aswell if possible, can you suggest a way?

 

Being a windows admin is there anything I'd need to do to lockdown the mac to stop fiddling?

 

As you'll prob have guessed I'm very green as far as macs are concerned.

I take it you are doing this without a mac server, ive had our mac network without, then with a mac server, and i cant stress enough how much it makes life easier for this kind of thing, im not sure how i managed before having one, for £600 well worth the investment if they want you to be managing this kit effectively.

 

If not you can run logon scripts just like windows to map printer and a drive, im sure someone with experience of doing so will post

 

As for the folders, im pretty sure you wont be able to stop them being created as everything is stored in library.

 

Although here the macs only create library, documents and desktop in the users home folder, and its not really affected anyone so am happy to leave it as it is.

I was hoping to try and get away without buying a mac server as I will only going to have 15 macs, I'm guessing I would only need a entry level server?

Even if it was 5 Macs I would say get a Mac Mini server, but if your getting 15 I would say 100% get a Mac Mini server!

 

You can use it to image them, and then for policy management too. As Ste1988 has said they are only £600 ex vat at education prices. Then you might just need to spend a bit extra for getting an expert (like me) in for the day to set it up for you.
