glennda Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 Awesome - it did pop up in my calendar earlier but I forgot about the whole American time difference thing!
jinnantonnixx Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 (edited) Ah, good. I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 and it's been OK. I'll probably give it a few days (just in case of any show-stoppers) then upgrade. I have quite a few things coming in through ppa, so I'll wait for these to catch up. Does anyone know if there's ANY point in a fresh install? I have a separate /home partition so there's no problem there. Edited April 26, 2012 by jinnantonnixx
Arthur Posted April 27, 2012 Author Posted April 27, 2012 Does anyone know if there's ANY point in a fresh install? As long as the upgrade works you should be fine... Ubuntu 10.04 – 12.04 Upgrade – How Well Does it Go? Direct upgrades have, for me at least, never quite worked as well as I wanted. The cost of 'in OS upgrading' was always the speed and fluid experience one gets from a totally-fresh install. So when I began taking notes for this article I was fully expecting to find this still true. I was expecting visual quirks, broken applications and a handful of conflicting configuration files to cause some curious behaviour. But in all honesty there is none of that (well, wallpaper aside!). Upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04 doesn’t feel like an 'upgrade' in the slightest: it feels like I've wiped my hard-drive and started over. And this is fantastic. The under-the-hood achievements in not only ensuring that such upgrades go successfully, but result in such a finely tuned desktop shows that Ubuntu 12.04 really does deserve to be titled 'Precise'. AngryTechnician Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 I'm upgrading from 11.10 on my laptop right now and it is taking FOREVER. I forgave the long download time, but I'm now on the install stage, which has been going for 2 hours and currently says "About 13 hours remaining". I never thought I'd find anything slower than an XP service pack install!
jinnantonnixx Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 This is good news about the upgrade. I'm going to wait a day or so to give the servers breathing space, I have a feeling they're hammered right now.
teejay Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Download the desktop iso image, you can now do an upgrade from that, much quicker as it only took about half an hour for me to get the iso down.
JJonas Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Done now rebooting If I dont come back something went wrong....
JJonas Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Back all working also did not switch me from Gnome to Unity Desktop as part of the upgrade
Arthur Posted April 27, 2012 Author Posted April 27, 2012 Just in case anyone didn't know, Ubuntu 12.04 includes drivers for Hyper-V by default now.
jinnantonnixx Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Successfully upgraded. Upgrade 'net speeds were horrendous, between 20kps and 60kps, but I ran it in the background and it was able to resume the upgrade in several sessions over the course of a couple of days. No problems, and it's great (so far!).
3s-gtech Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Just stuck it on a fresh build desktop test machine, not used Ubuntu since v8 as I switched to Debian for servers. Seems very nice, the OSX touches on Unity made me smile but it's easier to find my way around. Running nicely on an ancient Northwood P4 with 2GB of RAM.
jinnantonnixx Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Another Unity fan? I'll be on the third bench along reading a copy of the Times. 7pm. Make sure you're not followed.
scorcher89 Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I was running it from beta 2, upgrade to final was completely seamless. I'm not so much a fan of unity though I love Gnome shell with the default Gnome theme. It's really refreshing and the little things make it for me.
CAM Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 OK I've installed 12.04 on to my new HDD in a dual boot configuration and its eemed to go smoother then past encounters. I even found a nifty little game called Warzone 2100 in the repository. Still a few oddities though, Last.fm won't play ball with Rythmbox for example, but this release does seem a bit more polished.
JaSauders Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 As somebody who participated in the extremely early testing stages of Gnome Shell, I'll be the first to say I absolutely loved Gnome Shell. It's an incredibly intuitive interface. Once I got used to it, I was hooked. When Ubuntu 11.04 came out, I gave Unity a solid shot, just as I had done with Gnome Shell early on. 11.04's rendition of Unity sent me into a borderline homicidal rage, so I stayed away from it. 11.10's variant was better, but far from a home run. 12.04's edition of Unity has not only improved itself, but it's actually surpassed the shortcomings Gnome Shell had all along, such as the incredibly terrible printer manager, network manager interface, and certain apps not getting called to attention in the notification bar as they should have. Don't get me wrong, Gnome Shell is pretty great to use. 12.04's Unity has not only evolved into a very awesome desktop environment, but it actually claimed the spot as my preferred desktop environment. One year ago, I never would have thought...

One year ago, I never would have thought... I violently agree. When I first used Unity I didn't like it, I didn't understand it, I wanted my old menus back. I persevered and flicked between Gnome shell and Unity, getting more comfortable with the idea of 'no menus', and settled it by timing myself to do common tasks. Unity was faster, slicker and more efficient. Hats off to Mark Shuttleworth for his vision. Edited May 10, 2012 by jinnantonnixx
