Google Desktop

I have been asked to install the said item. What do you think i know the what it to display anolog clock and also a few useful features. I know they have just bought out an enterprise ed. you can control it from active directory and stop people installing extra desktop addons. what is your opinion and has anyone tried it yet.

Nice to know that you can control what bits the kids can load. However - we have just started a project using google docs which is a fantastic tool. Basically it is a free word processor but you can allow other people to have access tot he document that you are writing so they can add to it as well. Extremely good for brainstorming activities.

My only concern is the indexing and search fuctionality. When I last tested it, it was possible to index sensitive information (say emails for example) from one user and then search and find them as another (say a pupil).

 

I hope that the enterprise edition has addressed this problem? Even if it has, there seems to be ample scope for accidents.

Centrally manage user preferences using Microsoft Group Policy settings. For example, you can restrict Google Desktop Search from indexing specific websites that may contain sensitive information or prevent it from indexing a specific file type, such as IM chats. Similarly, administrators can disable Google Desktop’s Search Across Computers feature.

Got to say got it on home computer and search is god send to be honest (yes i know I should be wearing my tinfoil hat as goggle has all my data and so MI5 probably has file on me).

Well just use the Microsoft Desktop Search and be happy and safe from MI5 Russ. I use it, just because it allows instant searching in Outlook 2007 which is a god send.

Although it's a pain in the patookus when it comes to the new search features in explorer which still have no relationship to usability.

Sorry Contink, I don't follow, Once setup and told where to index and not to go, and its done its major search its seems brilliant to me.

the feature i like with the google one it you can set the index up yourself ie for me will only index after 15mins of idle
