TMODAlpha Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Hi guys, Got a question. We have a room of RM ones. In the BIOS they have wake from ring and PCI. No wake on LAN option. So sending a magic packet does not work as you would expect. It will wake from standby and hibernate fine with Vanilla Windows 7 installed (because I assume windows takes care of this). However when CC3 XP is installed, it will wake from soft shutdown when tasked in RMMC. How do they do it?! Thanks
AngryTechnician Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Have you tried the wake from PCI option? That might do it anyway, as the network card will be run through the PCI bus.
SYNACK Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 It could also be set in the advanced driver properties under Windows Device manager. This can be configured in the NIC itself so this may be where it needs to be done.
andyturpie Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 +1 for AngryTechnicans response. When we had RM ones that seemed to work for us.
AngryTechnician Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 What SYNACK said. Check that the below option is ticked on the network card in Device Manager. Our RM ecoquiets have it inexplicably unticked by default after a fresh install (every other model computer we have has it ticked).

Got 2 test Windows 7 machines and 1 Windows XP test machine. All 3 have the wake on PCI enabled and always have, and all have the option enabled in the device properties in device manager. Any more suggestions?
TMODAlpha Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 Any more suggestions before I set fire to them?
synaesthesia Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Can't think of anything personally (all been covered above) however you could recoup some of your losses by selling tickets to your bonfire night - I imagine that would be quite a success
TMODAlpha Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 Can't think of anything personally (all been covered above) however you could recoup some of your losses by selling tickets to your bonfire night - I imagine that would be quite a success Yeh checked all of the above again this morning. Its got wake on pci enabled, and all the check boxes above checked. Still wont wake from S5. :-\ I never thought of that, ill talk to our business manager and get some risk assessments sorted.
ste1988 Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 WE have rm ones that wouldn't boot they had only the two options you have got also, and it was because wake from pci was disabled. Ill have a look what model numbers they are, i can't think for one minute it wouldn't be possible
AngryTechnician Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Have you checked to see if you can find any newer drivers for the network card? Perhaps have a search for Intel model ID on http://downloadcenter.intel.com/
TMODAlpha Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 Have you checked to see if you can find any newer drivers for the network card? Perhaps have a search for Intel model ID on http://downloadcenter.intel.com/ Do drivers have any effect once they are powered down? Is it not then down to the motherboard/BIOS? They are marvell yukon cards if that helps.
SYNACK Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 What about the settings under the advanced tab that I was talking about, these are not the same thing as the checkboxes that there is a screenshot of above.
TMODAlpha Posted May 1, 2012 Author Posted May 1, 2012 What about the settings under the advanced tab that I was talking about, these are not the same thing as the checkboxes that there is a screenshot of above. Checked there too. Relevent option was Wake-up capabilities, with the choice of magic packet, pattern match or both. I've tried all 3. None work. Might be worth mentioned, while they were still XP CC3 they booted fine with magic packet. As soon as XP came off, they dont work. Also another room with identical machines has PCI-E network cards, wake on PCI is enabled, magic packeting the MACs of the PCI-E cards also dont work.
SYNACK Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 BIOS update, excorcisum? Under the advanced properties is there a state for sleep speed, some drivers have a setting where you can choose the sleep speed of the card to save power by turning it off or dropping it to 10mbits. Maybe try investigating that setting. The upgrade to W7 should not have affected it in this way unless the drivers have instructed the NIC to do something different. This should be verifyable by disconnecting the HD and the machine still not responding where as after putting in an XP HD (maybe from another one) and booting it once then disconecting it should WOL. 1
AngryTechnician Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 If they were working on CC3 and not on Windows 7, it has to be a software issue. The drivers could affect it as a dodgy driver might not be applying the relevant tickbox settings (above) to the actual hardware before it enters sleep. Can you post the exact name of the card as it appears in device manager? 1
TMODAlpha Posted May 2, 2012 Author Posted May 2, 2012 Yeh, true. I didnt think about the driver changing something on the card, but that makes sense. The thing that doesnt make sense is that a room with the same machines, but with Intel E1000 cards in, doesnt wake on those cards either. Will all the relevent bits enabled. The onboard cards in the ones im really having problems with is a Marvell Yukon 88E8053.
TMODAlpha Posted May 2, 2012 Author Posted May 2, 2012 Guys, you are amazing. It was the driver. Grabbed the one from the Yukon site, and all is well in computer land. The new driver gives an extra wake from shutdown option. Never thought a driver could effect it while it was switched off. Crazy. Thanks for your help.
AngryTechnician Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Good to hear. Could you post the link to the driver you used for the next person who has the same problem?

enjay Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Having the exact same problem here since moving to Windows 7, Intel and Realtek cards affected - I'll go check for updated drivers...
enjay Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Having the exact same problem here since moving to Windows 7, Intel and Realtek cards affected, but new drivers hasn't helped. The LAN link lights are still on with the Intel ones, but off with the Realtek one. I could be onto a loser with the Intel ones (RM PCs with Intel DG845 boards, as there aren't Win7 drivers for those), however the Realtek ones (on an Intel DG41AN board) do have Windows drivers. Annoyed by this, as it is definitely a driver question, since all these PCs WOLed under XP.

Contact the card maufacturers and see if they can shed any light on it? Or try using an XP driver?
enjay Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Or try using an XP driver? Didn't think of that, worth a shot I suppose...
TMODAlpha Posted May 4, 2012 Author Posted May 4, 2012 Didn't think of that, worth a shot I suppose... Let me know how you get on.
