Exchange Spam?!

Morning everyone!

 

I have come in this morning to notices on my desk that says people are getting alot of Spam email coming through... I'm using Exchange 2010 SP1 and I think it's Hub Transport. Is there a free and easy way to block spam email coming through ? I've heard you can put Postfix in front of Exchange and get it to relay mail to/from Exchange but with Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus using Clam.

 

Does anyone use this solution and can anyone give any advice on how they block spam ?

It has a buitl in spam filter that you can enable. Below is the technet article:

Yeah I've seen that but to quote that article:

 

"It isn't a best practice to run anti-spam functionality on the Hub Transport server."

 

We don't run Edge Transport only Hub - So I don't fancy enabling it on our only server.

Best practice would probably be to purchase a 3rd party supported piece of software or hardware to do your anti-spam for you. Best practice and the best solution do not always sit perfectly together.

 

If the spam is a huge problem today, then ignore best practice, and get the spam filter (only light) setup but instead of rejecting the emails get them redirected to a spam box. This would remove the worse of the offending emails, assumign you are getting the usual type of emails associated with spam.

 

This way all emails are still kept and you can briefly look at them once a day to check nothing genuine is getting caught.

 

Then look at best practice setup your exchange filtering, when you aren't as rushed.

Thats great I may just look at that, is there an easy guide on how to forward all spam to a mailbox ? From reading the tech article it all looks CMD based!

I've just been on our Exchange box and on the "content filtering" you can quarantine items wth a SCl rating above a certain number. Use this and have the value set high to start with, and disable reject and delete messages.

 

Sender reputation filtering is also adviseable as it purely blocks "bad" senders. So you have to be a bad sender to be on the list, not just have an email with bad content. But definitely do the quarantine first.
