Bit of a 'how long is a piece of string?' question.....but....

How long does it take to switch ISPs? Are we talking days, weeks, months?

Are you talking at home or at school?

When I switched at home from BT to plusnet it was turned around in about 2 weeks.

Sorry, should have made myself clear; school.... replacing existing 100 mbit link

If current fibre is installed and it's coming from another provider at the moment then it could be leased to the lea, you will be terminating this and leasing it yourself.

Providers give a 65 working day lead time which could increase if excess construction costs are identified.

If using the existing circuit this lead time could be reduced.

90 Days for me and having just moved away to Global AXS have to say so far its the best thing we have done!

100Mbs is brilliant! Took me 4 mins to download the Windows 8 Preview earlier (3 or 4.5Gb)

I guess it depends on LA, we'd likely waited another 3yrs before they pulled their finger out so rather than just pull the connection (and stuff all the primary schools who use us as a hub) it was simpler to pay the excess construction charge and get a new line!

We had spare fibre installed originally so openreach just terminated that and once the lea equipment is removed that will become our spare fibre.

I am hoping we are in a similar position; I need to get a survey done asap.

TBH if you are careful you should be able to open the fibre tray which is you should then be able to roughly see whats in there. BT will try and charge you to survey if you havn't placed an order.

If you are unsure what to look for in the tray post a picture up of it and we can let you know if there is spare cores which are unterminated (it might not be simple to view depending on how tidy it was done)

It will vary depending on a number of things but what most people have said will give general indication.

If there is spare fibre in the run it makes it easier as many providers will make use of this rather than needing to put more in. You might be able to get your new provider to novate the line from the old provider, but that usually only happens when a new provider takes over a contract.

If there is no capacity or the existing fibre cannot be used then there might be spare tubes available to blow in some more fibre and the worst case is that new fibre needs a complete install, and it would be very rare for this to incur excess construction costs as the existing ductwork should be useable.

Timescales ... BT Wholesale will usually require 50 working days after receiving the instruction from the provider. Depending who you are going with they might not be using BT infrastructure but that would be unusual. So, by the time you put the order in, the provider then processes it, hands it over to BT, the work gets done, then handed over to the provider to hook into their network ... 65 working days is usual.

We have had anything from 65 days through 2 years ... But the delays there are related to planning traffic management which had a number of rejections ... and then existing ducts found to have collapsed and needing replacing ... it really can be soul destroying to get that call to say it is delayed again ... So make sure you have a backup plan.

@broc:

Get the survey done first as it costs nothing, they will then send you out the details and the costs involved, you will then have to make the decision to move forward or not, if not as I say it costs nothing at this stage.

Good luck,
