[ipad] Ipad talking to network

Hi all

 

Thinking of investing in some ipad / tablets in the future. Thought i would ask if anybody has any tips / pitfalls to get them running on a windows network. I was thinking about using either the citrix app or maybe something like vmware. So students can access network shares etc.

Adding them to my wireless network was as easy as adding it to any home network, just use the on-board setting in the "Settings" app to set it up.

For my part, the biggest pitfall ot the iPads is physical security. They are VERY easy to slip into a bag unnoticed, so make sure you relay to the teachers that they MUST count the iPads out & back in when they use them. Label them all with security markings (I've got mine with a "Year X iPad X" label, an asset tag, and written the school details on the back using a pen that only shows up under UV light).

Authenticated Proxies will usually cause issues... many apps etc use https, and iOS doesn't cache / remember https proxy auth details. It'll hold them for a single connection, but then prompt for the next, which can result in many prompts to enter user and pass per hour. You'll generally need to set up a separate proxy which uses IP-based identification with no auth, and a proxy.pac file so that you can cover local exceptions.
