yes completey customizable, if you have ever used mcafee EPO it works like that

 

for most of the work "agents" are installed on the windows machines, reporting back to the SCCM server lets sya every 15 mins.

You can tell these agents to do alot of things! report how much ram , OS, update, install, near enough ANYTHING.

 

Im sure microsoft have a VHD you can download to have a play with as a trail that fits into a testbed, the do for SCVVM

Not yet, they had a release webinar yesterday which didn't give any information. Still looking for first part of this year. Hopefully soon as we're going SCCM this summer.

 

For note, Forefront Endpoint Protection is an integral part of SCCM.

 

I had a little trouble getting it set up but have been using the guides over Portal - www.windows-noob.com also which have been excellent.

 

Also someone linked to the Beta2 VHD earlier - please note that it's now Release Candidate 2 with RTM probably within the next couple of months.

does sccm need the sql server on the same box? im wondering if the install problems im having are due to me trying to use a seperate sql server ?

@RabbieBurns - No the SQL Server can be on any box, just make sure that the remote SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections as this is what usually causes people the most headache's...

SQL can be hosted anywhere - Ive been running it against a cluster since install. On the 2012 front, can also substantiate the rumourings about MMS... there is lots and lots of talk about it.

Not sure if it works with 2008 R2, if using 2008 it needs to be at least SP2 and I think it needs a specific CU..

No change to the default install AFAIK, but as I said, you need to run the SQL Configuration tool or whatever its called to allow remote access from the SCCM Server

yeh the RC says it works with R2. So its not just a case of opening the ports? What do i need to do within the configuration tool please?

Ive just created a new SQL instance on the SQL server using the default instance this time, and it seems to be letting me continue. Previously I was using a named instance.

OK, install is going fine against the default instance I created. I hadnt read anywhere that it wouldnt work with a named instance but Im guessing that was my problems all along.

 

Also, with the default install the collation was wrong I had to use this command to fix it:

 

Setup /QUIET /ACTION=REBUILDDATABASE /INSTANCENAME=MSSQLServer /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS=rabbieburns /SAPWD=supersecretpass /SQLCOLLATION=SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS

Is this for SCCM 2007 or 2012? I know SCCM 2012 is very picky about the SQL collation type, but didn't think 2007 was?

That's the fix you need to apply (or set it during installation) to get SQL 2008 R2 working with SCCM 2012. Shouldn't have any issue further from that.

Anyone testing using 2012 and FEP 2012 yet? I have not used SCCM or FEP before but tying to find an alternative to sophos. I think I have everything set up but definitions are not being updated on the selected clients I have installed the client on. I have the updates being pulled down to SCCM and an automatic deployment rule the malware policy is set to check for updates every two hours and the sources are set as the configuration manager server but clients just dont update with the new definition automatically. click the big Update button and they get it but cant get this automated.

Looks like we are going with Forefront Endpoint so we need SCCM. It needs to be done within 20 days, i home SCCM 2012 comes quick

Sccm 2012 is great and made my life easier as a network admin. Forefront is ok I did find it has very little custimisation in regards to exceptions etc.

Exceptions in Forefront 2012 (which is just rebranded 2010 I hasten to add) are easy - do them via registry and send out fragments via GPO.
