cookie_monsta Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Morning all, I have a strange issue (well strange to me anyway) This morning the Office Manager/Bursar told me that her drives are not mapping over and have red crosses on them. If she tries to access 'StaffPublic' for example it will prompt her for her username and password, which has never happened before. The user is a SIMS user and has a SIMS profile. The logon script for this user also maps across a drive that only she and the Head have access to. PC is a windows 7 x64, connecting to a Windows server 2008 R2 domain controller. The user has logged onto another machine in the office and the drives etc map over as she would expect (both a Win 7 pc and a XP laptop), however her PC has the finance applications she needs. I have logged on her machine as my test SIMS user and that works a-ok. No new applications have been added in the last 2 months and it was functioning correctly last night. It safe to say the the issue is local to her machine.... but how do I fix it? I hope this makes sense...and thanks in advance for your help Cookie
chazzy2501 Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 her user account is locked out? she's changed her password after loggin in on another PC?
cookie_monsta Posted March 22, 2012 Author Posted March 22, 2012 her user account is locked out? she's changed her password after loggin in on another PC? she has changed her password but that was a day or two ago (i think) on the PC she is having issues with. She is also a local admin on her pc if that helps.....
cpjitservices Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Have you tried removing the mapped drives and manually adding them again ?
cookie_monsta Posted March 22, 2012 Author Posted March 22, 2012 Have you tried removing the mapped drives and manually adding them again ? when i tried it prompted the user for the user name and password.... this is only happening on her pc.... the other two Win 7 machines in the office are exactly the same build..... is there a local profile record that I can delete that can fix the problem?
ToyHeartsFan Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 (edited) The shares with the problem are all on the same server could it have been rebooted for a microsoft update etc... while she was logged in so they went offline? If she disconnects the shares, logs off and back on again do they still show as unavailable? Edit: beaten to it Edited March 22, 2012 by ToyHeartsFan

The server hasnt been turned off or rebooted for several weeks. No other users (pcs on XP or vista) have this problem, just her on that one PC. With it coming the end of the financial year and this term...she is mega busy and needs a fix for this....and so do I Lol she has no problems accessing the drives from the SIMS server, just the drives on the Domain Controller on this problematic pc ...
Achandler Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 If you have any form of cached profiles that might interfere. I would wipe her local profile and the reg key associated with it, HKLM/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS NT/ProfileList (I believe) Then make her log on. 1

Achandler Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 The exact RegKey is HKLM/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS NT/Current Version/ProfileList/ Then delete the key assocuated to her username, when you click on a key in the info it shows the username. Deleting his user files from c:\Users\ will also helop make sure she gets a "clean" profile. I woudl also remove her from local admins for her first login, and obviously make sure she has logged off and not just switched user before you do this. 1
ricki Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 HI Do you have more than one domain controllers. If you do make sure they are replicating. Check the time and date/ regional settings are the same as the ones on the server. Try knocking the machine off the domain and putting it back. It might also be a corrupt profile so checking to see if data is stored on the local machine and taking copies and deleting the profile and rebooting and allowing the network to recreate it might fix the problem. Richard Sorry I forgot is anything coming up in the event viewer as to why they are not mapping. 1
chazzy2501 Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 It's best in my experience to not manually delete the profile from the users folder but instead delete the local copy of the profile using the "user profiles" box in "system properties".

Richard Sorry I forgot is anything coming up in the event viewer as to why they are not mapping. Hi Richard, Just have the 1 Domain controller. im worried that deleting/removing file and profile data will have a bad knock on effect to her emails. (had a few issues with her email about 2 weeks ago) Her outlook 2010 is configured to the exchange server at EMBC.... she has lots of calander and contact entries....would these be stored locally? and if i remove her profile from the PC or remove the computer from the domain, what will happen to these files?
cookie_monsta Posted March 22, 2012 Author Posted March 22, 2012 ** update ** User has just advised me that she changed her password before going home last night. .....

cookie_monsta Posted March 22, 2012 Author Posted March 22, 2012 wierd!!! havent deleted anything... reset the users password in AD.. logged onto the machine as her, drives etc mapped with no problems. User reset password to one of her choice, rebooted, logged on and still worked a-ok im blaming gremlins. Many thanks to you all for your input and advise. Very much appreciated.
