WDS and FOG running simultaneously

Hi All.

 

We currently have WDS running for imaging the computers and are getting FOG set up, are both machines physical or vertual able to be running at the same time, and if so how would a computers decifer which one to go to or do you get a choice?

From my understanding both WDS and FOG servers can run fine together but you can only point the clients (desktops and laptops) to one deployment system at a time as this is set in DHCP, option 66 and 67.

 

Edit: Not sure this can be done but you might be able to set an option in FOG's PXE menu to boot the WDS deployment environment - maybe custom creating a WINPE ISO to connect to the WDS environment. Again havent played with it like that to know if this is possible.

do you know what ports are needed to be opened, so we can let swgfl know

ports..., do you have an internal DHCP server? or are you trying to role out images to multiple sites?

we have tried setting it up before and have had problems when it comes to intial package, and seemed to be problems with the swgfl firewall..

so you currently have WDS setup and running and are trying to download and install FOG? how far in installing FOG have you got and what linux distro are you using?

planning to, a colligue that no longer works here tried it in 2010 and was unable to compleate it as he believed that certain ports were blocked by swgfl firewall but didnt know what ones

OK, well in my experience in setting up FOG I never had to open any ports from SWGFL (secondary and two primaries). I installed ubuntu (10.04LTS is your best bet), put in our local proxy settings and ran updates, then downloaded the fog installation, extracted it to the opt folder and installed it from terminal.

You need to configure apt.conf (assuming some Debian derivative) with you proxy details so the fog install script can download packages, and then once installed, put you proxy details into FOG. As long as your SWGFL proxy will allow access to your chosen Linux distribution's repositories you won't have any problems. If you want to run a WDS and FOG mix then the easiest way is using DHCP groups and modifying the boot options per group.
