Apple/Android licenses?

Hi everyone. One of primary schools we support is looking at getting some tablets. So, Apple or Android? It isn’t easy to find much info on School/site licensing but as far as I know Apple offers some sort of school site license for an AppStore but not sure about Android.

 

Does anybody know anything about it? Any help is appreciated.

To my best knowledge Apple's Educational Licensing is only available in the US currently.

Never heard anything about an Android Eduction licence / site licence.

 

We got 30 iPads which were set up for us by the LEA, and we had to pay for each app individually on each of the devices

OK, I was digging around about Apple licensing and this is what I found:

 

There is a new Volume licensing from Apple for education but so far it’s only available in the US, they want to bring similar one to Europe but having some problems.

 

As far as I can see there are few different ways people are doing things. Just buying separate Apps for each iPad, another one is to sync all iPads with one iTunes account – but as far as I can see this would NOT be legal! And the third one is to buy one App and gift it to other iPads – as far as I can see you would need a separate iTunes account for each iPad.

 

There is also a syncing/charging trolley as “Sync Cart” for iPad which is around £2700!!! And it's on top of iPads, so don’t even get me started on this one…

Android is the way to go....... much more flexible....... (but that's because I can't afford Apple lol)

Most Android licenses are released as Open Source, you can install on as many devices as you like for free.

The only problem for me with free Android (and as a matter of fact Apple as well) Apps in school is that they have advertisements in them and adverts are not always very suitable for children to see.

 

Another thing some people recommend is to contact the app developer directly, as some smaller developers will offer some big discounts for education.

Remember, Open source doesn't mean free, licence free.

Firewall them. TBH all the android devices we have only really use the browser, google docs.

Not that many good free educational apps that are not implemented in VLE's web from what I gather.

I would recommend Android. The tablet market has not been properly saturated with educational software yet to favor apple or android. You will end saving up a lot of money and probably avoid a few licensing issues by going with Android.
