Might seem like a daft question but how do you turn off the audio comming out of the PC speaker when the headphones are not plugged in apart from the obvious disconnect the speaker wires or is that the only option?

The Windows volume control mixer will allow you to mute some sounds whilst allowing others. You can also disable Windows sounds easily enough.

I wouldn't advise disconecting leads inside the case for a variety of reasons, but you can buy 3.5 mm jack plugs cheaply enough (from Maplin) to stop any sound form coming out!

Presume they have realtek audio ( if so you can use the realtek audio control panel applet or application ) to set the default audio output device to headphones and hopefully it will always output to the headphone socket even with no speakers or no headphone connected or adjust settings as required.
