DHCP Apple

Hi

 

Does anyone know how I can tell if an Apple mac has been plugged into the network as they don't show up in DHCP.

 

Some of our pupils on a night try and plug laptops in - I have stopped the windows ones but 1 person has an Apple and I'd like to stop that.

my macbook pro shows up in the dhcp allocation, maybe they have worked out what range you use and set a manual address? in which case not sure what you can do other than monitor the network fully using mac addresses etc?

Mine shows up in DHCP also. Doesn't everything that gets an IP show up in DHCP?

The long hand way of doing things would be to introduce authentication into the mix whereby if the machines MAC address isn't on your file, then oops, it's not going to get on the network no matter what they try (unless they are keen enough to try faking a MAC address on their computer, but then they'd have to find a working MAC address first). But as people have said. Macs show up in DHCP. They might not always show a proper name (which can be a bug bear) but they certainly show up as a device if they're using a DHCP lease.
