bandgeekmafia78 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 (edited) Hi. I've come into work this morning and 2 of my hard disks have failed in my File Server over the weekend. I have a RAID-5 configuration with 8x 300gb SAS disks. I managed to force one of the disks online and fortunately the Server has come back up. However, it appears as though the registry has been corrupted and services such as netlogon, server, workstation etc. will NOT start. Most of the school data seems to be online but no-one in the school can log on because their roaming profiles are on this Server and they don't seem to have permission to access their home folders, desktops etc. I also got the message "registry hive (file) software was corrupted and it has been recovered. some data might have been lost." I've performed a chkdsk /r but this done much. Someone suggested using the Registry Hive User cleanup tool (?). I've ordered 2 disks which I will install tomorrow to rebuild the array but I'm worried that the registry is completely screwed. Any help/advice would be much appreciated! Thanks Edited February 20, 2012 by bandgeekmafia78 added information
Achandler Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 (edited) Step 1 take them off roaming profiles. Do you take backups that copy the permissions? The reason I ask is that if your registry is potential corrupt and this server is just a fiel server, then I would consider a complete reinstall and copy the files back across (if your backups keep your permissions) Edited February 20, 2012 by Achandler
bandgeekmafia78 Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 Its also our SQL Server and holds all our SharePoint data... I was hoping to avoid having to carry out your suggestion!
Achandler Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Then I hope someone knows a tool that has a chance of fixing your registry as much as possible. Then long term you can move off the server, if you have a lot of problems though, a new server for yoru files will atleast relieve a lot of pressure from staff wanting access etc.
Michael Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 You can only have one failed disk in a RAID5 array, so it's no wonder you're having problems. You were lucky you were able to bring one of the two failed drives back online, but clearly (from what you're saying) it's only half worked. You need to restore Windows Server from a backup and possibly the data too (just to be sure). I'm guessing you have a backup from Friday last week? If it's a member server it's simple to do. If it's a domain controller, or if you have more than one DC then it's a bit more complicated. 1
zag Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Time for disaster recovery plan to kick in I would forget about trying to repair it, just concentrate on moving the roles onto a new server and restoring backups. You were very lucky to be able to boot it back up and save the data. - Copy the data off it - Assign roles to a new server - Remove central profiles of the users for now - Prioritize the jobs that need to be done and think about how its effecting users before anything else. Sometimes they will just want to log in. - setup a status page for the network that people can access once you get them logged in - Get hyper-v up installed so you can quickly get new sql and sharepoint servers up and running 1
bandgeekmafia78 Posted February 22, 2012 Author Posted February 22, 2012 Hi. Thanks for your suggestions. Eventually I was able to do a repair of the Server OS. When I brought one of the disks back online it corrupted the SharePoint_Config database in SQL but fortunately I was able to do a restore from a previous backup. Now I am in the process of rebuilding the array with some nice new disks Panic over... for now!
