Jobos Posted May 15, 2007 Posted May 15, 2007 One of my primary schools is using 20GB tapes to backup their 2K server and it’s so slow, it takes most of the day. I would like to use NAS and schedule the backup overnight. They have a separate building linked by fibre so it would make sense to put the NAS over there and just use it for backup purposes. Not knowing anything about NAS how would I map a drive to the box and how would I restrict access so that only Administrators could use it?
plexer Posted May 15, 2007 Posted May 15, 2007 NAS as a backup device has been done very recently. Some of them integrate with AD for security so you just supply AD user details otherwise it could be ftp or built in database of people allowed to access it. Ben
ajbritton Posted May 15, 2007 Posted May 15, 2007 I would also suggest you take a look at BackupAssist. It can backup directly to NAS and puts a nice friendly wrapper around NTBACKUP.

bazuk Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Anyone have trouble with Buffalo NAS namely the terastation 1TB and 2TB models as well as the Terastation 2 units, The reason i am asking is that we have bought 2 of them as they say they are Active directory integrated, this is not the case they do not integrate with active directory at all as they are running a unit kernel too boot from. What they do is namely query the server for authentication and allow or disallow the user access to a SMB/CIFS share. I know the buffalo website obly states it supports active directory but the suppliers website who we bought them of off states they ingrate into active directory, as a result, the suppliers have refused to accept them as a return. The supplier in question is misco, they say they cannot accept them as a return as buffalo have refused to accept them. I dont get this at all, anyone else had the same problem??? baz
Trav Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 I have problems with a Buffalo 500 that I bought to play with for backing up reasons but it keeps corrupting on me. Have re-installed with no success and updated the firmware still with no success. Am now thinking of sending it back to supplier but it has pupil data on it, although this seems corrupt, I can't send it back with it on. Has anyone else had problems like this or does anyone have any suggestions?

Geoff Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 Yes, that'll fit fine. Remember the default is only 10% of the drive and you can control the disk usage of shadow copy anyway.

mortstar Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Dredging up an old thread. I've been looking at a Linksys One NSS6000 - filling it with 4x 250Gb and RAID 5ing it. This would be solely for file and SQL backups and would be kept in a rack separate from the servers. Has anybody had experience with these Linksys products? I'd preferable like a rack-mount solution if somebody suggests a different solution. My budgets about £1k for the whole thing (including BackupAssist licences).
