The agony and ecstasy of Dropbox

I thought I would share my troubles, as that is the way of things these days!

 

I use Dropbox as a backup tool. It syncs with all my files, which i have stored on a NAS at home. Dropbox doesn't allow this naturally so with some fiddling and symbolic linking I got it to do it. I have my work laptop and home laptop both acting as the engine for the backup.

 

Go to my NAS this morning, all bar 3 files have gone. Look on Dropbox, all bar 3 files have gone.

 

Dropbox has seen I am not connected to my home network while I was away yesterday, and decided that all the files must be deleted online, and then when I get back, rolls that change out to my NAS.

 

Consuming mountains of maltesers from my birthday to console myself, I discover Dropbox has an online recycle bin.... HOORARRRRR!!!

 

1 piece of advice, don't screw around with Dropbox's way of doing things... Or please god let Dropbox support network drives soon.

I pay for the packrat function as well for previous versions etc.

Why not simply install Dropbox on your (presumably Linux-based and so hackable) NAS?

 

The CLI install method's been around for years.

One of the reasons I love Crashplan+. Paid for a stupidly long unlimited subscription when they did a special offer a couple of years ago and it's been brilliant. Syncing files (and keep revisions of files for as long as you want) to the cloud and any local backup repositories I want is great

Well I'm going to set up the web service for my NAS soon so not going to mess around with DB for much longer. My NAS is RAIDed so barring a fire/flood I should be fine.
