BT has urged the owners of residential buildings in the UK, to sign up for the prototype version of the proposed super-fast broadband connection, to assess its speed in households. The company is looking for support from about 1,000 apartment renters to carry out their study.

 

The buildings that would participate in the pilot scheme will initially be allotted a downstream speed extending to a maximum of 100 Mbps. The speed will be improved later on, and would reach up to 300 Mbps if the subjects demand a faster connection during analysis. The company sources said that upstream speed provided by them is the fastest in the country.

Interesting - does that mean 100Mbps for the entire building? So, if there are 15 apartments like my last place had, you end up with that shared across potentially 15 - 20 people? Does it also mean that the connection would be provided by the landlord and its users connected to it? If so, does that mean that the landlord is effectively becoming a mini-isp for his tenants? What would the legal implications of that be?

 

Great that they're rolling out high speed connections, but some of the logistics seem a bit 'grey' at the moment.

Is this for leasehold flats as well?

It makes business sense to encourage people in blocks of flats to do it... lots of people in a small geographical area.
