Someone remind me why Apple products are so expensive.....?

At no point should a user of any product have to hide in a corner. Does it do what it needs to for you? Yes? Great - out of the corner you come and be proud you achieve your goal with the tools you choose. I will stand by my right to beat anyone who knowingly and willingly buys a Macbook, removes any trace of OSX and sticks an install of Windows on it, with the largest 386 Compaq laptop I have in my possession. That is an "Apple Idiot" by definition. No different to someone who buys a BMW 3 series/Mercedes C class/Audi/insert premium car maker here, rips out the engine and replaces it with a 1.2 zetec from a fiesta.

Not saying Windows is bad, nor a 1.2 zetec.

 

The point is simple; if someone wishes to mock another based on their choice of tool and that tool does exactly what is required, then that person needs slapping. That's the childish part. In general we need to stay objective and focused on the important people, our own judgement is of course important but our thoughts on devices or a company should not detract from what could possibly do a lot of good for the children who's lives we are charged with improving, the minds we are charged with expanding.

 

I agree ref why spend all that money on a different tool and then change the engine ie mac book and rip out the inerds and replace it with something different or the same with a car buying a rolls royce and shoving a bugatti veyron engine inside of it, you obviously made the wrong purchase to start with if that is what you are doing. Since Apple started using Intel CPU's is when I stuck with them as I do use boot camp to use both windows and OS X. Not like I purchased an apple mac with OS X only to wipe it and only shove I don't know DOS or only linux on it when I could of purchased a much cheaper computer and shoved linux on that.

 

My aim was to use OS X as I like how it for the most part just works out the box ( I appreciate it has bugs or quirky things not to mention the amount of extra ££££ that it costs )

 

As for Mr Jobs ref oxymoron being a genius and a moron at least in your opinion, he must of been a genius regardless of how or what he did ( before he died ) at least in my opinion as it's not like the stories ( if they are true ) in the papers ref teachers being sex offenders / peadophiles etc ) **edited ** not to say all teachers or people in education are dodgy but just as an example in regards to apple making profit in a legitimate way at least to a degree

 

1. At one point in time when they showed how much apple was worth ( not sure if it included share holders money etc ) but they were worth more then the US Government

2. He must of left a huge lump sum with his family after being CEO of apple after he passed away

 

How can making that insane amount of money be stupid ( Yes they do have all these law suits flying back and forth between samsung / htc and other companies ) but even so *Hobbles along in the same job making pennies in comparison*.......

 

but to noones knowledge is he or anyone at the top of Apple a sex offender. But they lie and cheat considerably more than the next company along.

 

Like when other ISP's excluding cable broadband ( now virgin media ) used to advertise that you can get 24mbps or 20mbps ( which is only upto as a maximum ) yet said cable company ( now virgin media ) advertise you get 50mbps and you literally get 50mbps ( 49mbps ) which is a hell of a lot closer then BT / Talk Talk / other ISP companies who will try and waffle to end users on the phone stating we can give you a faster service when they can't. I had this with BT a couple of years ago.

 

ME : Calls BT ref our phone bill, near the end of the conversation ref to the phone bill,

BT : oh by the way we can offer you a better and faster internet connection , are you interested.... ??

ME : ok so what can you offer me ?

BT : 5mbps

ME : *Back of my mind having a big chuckle and thinking to myself, you have to be joking right ? ! ? "......... Says to the BT Advisor "I already get a much faster connection then that as we have an ADSL2+ connection with bethere.co.uk on a 24mbps connection

BT : Trying to fob me off and lie to me, but ADSL is faster then ADSL2+ and * more lies, more lies, more lies * etc

ME : I may not be the know it all when it comes to IT and have a lot to learn but I know you are lieing, good bye, hangs phone up as said person won't accept what I am saying and most likely doesn't care as said person just wants to make a sale.

 

What about looking for a bank loan, on most if not all bank websites it states you will get 6% or 7.7% APR on said loan, you apply for it and you end up with 15% APR ( only to find in the small print you have to have or be very close to a triple A ( AAA ) credit rating ) in order to get anything near to that APR

 

I think all companies lie and cheat just as much as each other, just like microsoft and apple ( or apple and Microsoft ) keep stealing ideas off of each other.

The difference with Apple is that they have the cleverest legal people of them all. The marketing folks come up with something then the legal people work out how they can get away with it. A lot of what they do is speculative (i.e. just do it and see if it sticks; something they unfortunately succeeded with on the original iPhone marketing and Macbook Air) - you could argue 1024MB in 1GB, bankloan rates, another gram off a mars bar, 1000watts PMPO on your HiFi or "up to 24Mbps broadband" but at least in most cases (dont think this applies to the chocolate ) they have small print to whittle it down somewhat.

 

There is no denying Steve Jobs was not stupid - perhaps "moron" was the wrong word, I meant as in "greedy and conniving git". But you of course have to have a certain amount of intelligence around you to pull that off, and as you rightly point out that applies to many heads of companies. Without him, IT would be a different place, but he hadn't actually contributed to it himself in the last 20 years.

 

Great example, original iPhone marketing.

 

"The best phone in the world".

 

It was actually terrible in comparison to about 5 other handsets at the time. It lacked just about anything that most people found important, but on the success and name of the iPod, there was no arguing this with some people. But Apple pulled it off.

I think at the time and still maybe the case it's more the usability of the iphone vs other handsets out there, yes there has been a lot of touch screen devices way before the iphone but as stated in other threads they took something that has been available and out there and made it work as it should do without any stylus devices ( that you always lose ) and you can use your hands / fingers instead of a stylus and the menu system and how iOS interacts with the hardware just works on the slower hardware the same way OS X works on older hardware.

 

Once the iPhone came out then other touch screen based phones pulled there socks up figuratively speaking as far as making them more user friendlier , googles free sat nav etc ( could be wrong ) but that's what I saw, once the iphone ( first gen ) was released other companies started to release better handsets minus stylus pens etc or they updated the firmware / OS on the handsets to make them work a lot better or how they should of worked to start with.

 

I do agree that maybe they could adjust the marketing a bit as I think that maybe apple marketing comes across wrong, as with any problem there are always multiple solutions , some quicker, some slower, some more effective etc like the saying why use a bazooka to kill a fly when you could use a fly swatter ( plenty of other similar sayings that have the same meaning )

which is another reason why I got the lower spec mac mini, let them pay and advance tech for 3 years ie SSD's, thunderbolt etc and come my next purchase in 3 years or so I can get a stonker of a machine :-)
