Hi,

We have a number of RM ones at the school that I work and they are all 4 years old and extremely slow. Would you recommend getting all new computers or upgrading them with 4gb of ram and getting solid state drives?

Ours run fine now after I wiped one re-installed XP and created a new image and deployed it around the others ... More ram is always good news but it depends on what programs you run as to the amount of speed gain you get .. You will notice more difference running a hard drive intensive program than just internet for example .. Hardware itself doesnt slow down with age but its the operating system that does .. Lots of temp files etc etc so a reinstall will get then back to the speed that they were when new ...

... and you have to remember that XP goes out of support in April 2014, so you do need to be thinking about replacement anyway.

ours were revitalised with new ram here, their probably older than 4 years, (Conroe chips, but their running windows 7 fine with the added ram)

I do not like those machines at all, I would get rid of them (funds permitting)

Ours came with 128MB RA, Upgraded to 2GB RAM and they're much better, still coming to the end of their life though.

Are we talking about the all-in-one desktops here? If so, you can simply replace the whole motherboard, giving you a new computer with whatever RAM and processor you like. I understand you'll have to transfer the OEM Windows XP license over to the new hardware, and you really might as well upgrade to Windows 7 while you're at it.
