Any recommendations for home, preferably free, if not as cheap as possible but needs to be up to the job, something like NetNanny.

 

Never used anything like this before and need it for a laptop for a customer who has a kid who is obsessed with naughty sites, this is about the 5th rebuild on machines in as many months.

How about OpenDNS? it's free,

 

Configure OpenDNS DNS servers on the wireless/router then any computer that connects will be filtered accordingly.

I usually recommend K9 Web Protection - Free Internet Filter and Parental Control Software | Free Internet Filtering and Parental Controls Software

 

There are free versions for Windows, MacOS and IPhone/iPad/IPod touch

 

This is tempered with the e-safety advice that it's no substitute for talking to kids or for supervising them.

 

At the end of the day, kids who want to get onto naughty sites will find a means to do so.... I'm not convinced that any of the NetNanny stuff is outstanding at proxy filtering. For that you need smoothwall!
